Shirokov scouting report

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Kirill Starkov, a Columbus Blue Jackets draft pick who was teammates with Sergei Shirokov last season in Russia. Here’s what Starkov had to say about Shirokov, who will likely join the Canucks organization next season:

“Shirokov is a very good person, a down to earth kind of guy. I actually don’t know about his English but he is a smart kid. Personally, I think he has the right mind to make it in Canada. As a player, Shirokov is a great talent who loves to play hockey. He has great skill, very fast and comes out of tight situations. Shirokov is Russian in his style of play and how he thinks hockey. He’s a very entertaining player to watch.”

Encouraging words to say the least.

On a completely unrelated note, my 2009 NHL Mock Draft is all but complete and it will be released tomorrow on InsideHockey.com and ThePressBox.org. Check it out and let me know what you think!
